Géographe, professeur honoraire de l’Université Jean Monnet de Saint-Étienne, spécialiste de l’évaluation et de la gestion des ressources en eau, Jacques Bethemont a fondé et dirigé de 1975 à 1995 un laboratoire du CNRS, le LA 260 devenu par la suite UMR 5600. Ce laboratoire travaille encore sur les problèmes rhodaniens.
